We've got a few other exciting things coming down the pipe that we can't wait to share with everyone, but we've got to stay mum about those for the time being.  However, all will be revealed in the coming days.  Stay tuned!

THANK YOU!

It is official: We now can say with the utmost certainty that your friends rival boys will be plunging ahead to new adventures this year. We were so excited to announce that our EP, Ice Storm, came out this week. We celebrated with fantastic show at the Silver Dollar on Friday night.

It was marvelous to see so many faces (old and new) supporting our music and dancing their faces off on a cold February evening. We couldn't have asked for a  better night!

Apart from the release show, we also produced a brand new video for one of the songs on the record. This is an old song; written almost 8 years ago - but it has finally been given its due.
It was a first for us to produce a video completely on our own, and it was a huge challenge! We produced all the costumes, choreography and sets ourselves, and Sam was able to edit it to weird perfection.  I am hopeful that the wind-mill arm dance move will be come an RB signature...

We can also say that the EP is available to be streamed on Exclaim! and bought on iTunes. Please get a copy!

We will continue to work on new music videos, and will be playing as many shows as possible leading up to the release of our full length album Animal Instincts in May.

We can't thank you enough for all your support over these years. rival boys foreverrrrrrr!

A New Year, A New EP

Hey Folks!

As we're once again suffering through some oppressively cold winter weather, we thought it would be a great time to announce that, in spite of (or inspired by?) the cold, we've got a new EP done, and set for release Feb 25, 2014 (through Tiny Records/Maple Music/Universal)!  As we've all been waiting patiently for our album proper to be released, we've been working harder than ever on new material, and, when the Ice Storm hit around Christmas-time, with little else to do other than play music, we really hunkered down and made something special.  Even though our new Ice Storm EP was recorded and mixed over only 2 days, it sounds amazing! We're really excited for everyone to hear some pretty raw, live versions of some brand new tunes!

Be sure to come to the release show for our Ice Storm EP on Friday, February 28, 2014, at the Silver Dollar in Toronto! And check us out on Feb 1 in Sudbury, and Feb 5 in Toronto too!

RECORDING

We have FINISHED.

After 6 months or so of planning, song writing and recording, we have finally completed our second full length record! Awwwww yea.

We have felt incredibly lucky over that period of time - with the incredible good fortune of being able to record in one of top studios in the city (and the country for that matter): Revolution Recording is a pretty wonderful place, and we have met so many talented, kind and enthusiastic people during our time there. It felt pretty surreal to be able to play in such a luxurious studio, and to hear our music blasted out through the biggest speakers. We are so grateful for the opportunity to have made this record in such a place.

... and we think the record sounds amazing too! Get ready to have your ears blasted off with some epic, poppy hits! The release has yet to be confirmed, but look for it in early 2014. We will be releasing some singles, and hopefully some music videos before then however...

Below are some pictures of our recording adventures:

ALBUM NEWS

So, despite the fact that there is no evidence of progress on this blog (which I plan to update more often as a delayed new years resolution - those things are so hard am I right?!), we really HAVE been working incredibly hard on our new record.

We have had some stumbling blocks along the way; changes to almost everything related to this project have been popping up. However, we are now in a place where we know when, where and how we will record what we hope is our best music to date.

We have had so much fun recently playing together, and could not be happier with the new music we are coming up with. Last December marked 5 years of being in a band together. We forgot to mark the occasion with anything special, but I was panged with nostalgic memories of the 68 shows we've now played together (wow, it feels like more, maybe that's a lot? who knows). But I will say that we don't feel like we'll be slowing down anytime soon.

We'll be sharing updates, some musical bits and pieces, and photos from now until Spring when we hope the record will be fully recorded. Below are some shots of our preproduction sessions over the last couple of months:

MUSIC MARATHONS

We have had a great summer of music - playing lots of shows and making friends with some great bands. It has felt like a whirlwind since the last time I updated the blog, so this is where we go from here:

We are heading up to a cottage near Huntsville today for a week of music writing! This is in advance of the recording of a new record in January. We've been working on new material for the better part of a year now, and we'll spend the next week coming up with more new songs, and getting to know one another better in a confined space! Music Marathon!

We couldn't be more excited to be working on this project. Though the record won't be done for another few months, we are in recording mode starting now! And we get to spend our days living in a cottage and taking care of a cute cat.

More to come, stay tuned!

SUMMER BULLETINS

It's summer - or it almost is, and we've been getting excited about warm weather, pools, gardens and bands.

We've got a few cool things coming up on the horizon, so I decided to get into blog mode and write about them.

Starting this week, the NXNE festival moves into Toronto's venues, and we'll be playing two shows:

Thursday June 14 at The Rivoli at 9PM
and Saturday June 16 at The Garrison at 2PM

The first is an Arts and Crafts showcase, and the second is a PWYC pop-up show which has promised caesars and tacos (yum). Any show with tacos is a good show in my mind.

Following this, we have a couple more dates in Toronto in July, then an appearance at the Hillside Festival in Guelph ON. We are extremely excited about this show. Having been to the festival as a spectator a few times, I know how fun it is to be there. Now having the opportunity to play is a mini-dream come true!

Later in the summer we'll be joining the SummerWorks theater festival's Music Series, playing the closing night party at The Great Hall on August 19. Also a great festival to be a part of. There are some great acts performing this year including Bry Webb, Hawksley Workman and The Magic.

The summer is already racing by even though we haven't even reached June 21st. We're making the most of it though - and playing in the summer rules. Here we go:

NEW YEAR'S GRIN

Happy New Year!

2011 was an incredible year for the Rival Boys clan. We released our first full length album, played more shows than any other year in our short history (2012 will be 5 years in November!), and made new friends with some great Canadian bands.

The positive response we've been getting from our album is amazing. We are so grateful to any one who bought it, downloaded it, or came out to a show this past year. We can feel kind of insulated when we hear our old songs over and over again in our rehearsal space - so it's an excellent feeling when a people come up to you after a show and says how much they like the record.

2012 is shaping up to be an even better year for us. We spent the fall of last year recording some demos of new songs, with the hopes of recording another full length album soon. We hope to re-enter the studio very soon to continue the pre-production of this next project. One of the tracks we recorded can now be downloaded on our bandcamp page! FREE!

Looking back on last year, here are my favourite band memories... ahh how I love looking back fondly at these moments:

The last recording session for our album! Our friends came to help sing on 'Recovery':

Releasing our record at the Garrison, our friends made this amazing cake!:

Riding back and forth on our bikes to the rehearsal space on the bike path near our house:

Seeing Wax Mannequin at Kazoo Fest in Guelph was AMAZING. Maybe the best show I've seen all year:

Playing with the dogs at the Fortnight Farm Fest in Guelph and sitting on a bale of hay at the same time was the best show environment for everyone involved. That plus free beer? The best"

Recording at Riverworks Studio! We always have awesome times with Mike Rocha:

Happy 2012!

RIVERWORKS

This post is long overdue - we spend a weekend recording 6 songs with Mike Rocha at Riverworks studios. We recorded 5 original songs and one special holiday number, with wonderful tape-y results. 8 track recording is FUN! We'll hopefully be doing much more of this before releasing another record. Here are some pictures of the process:

UNTOUCHABLE

Here's an interview we did with the nice guys at Untouched Sounds before our most recent show at The Drake. I just finished watching it (having not had a private moment with my computer by which to cringe comfortably at myself before now), but I found I was completely cringe-free! I think we're getting better at this! But more so - Ciaran and Geoff edited out our more annoying ranting dialogue so we come off looking smart and on the ball!

That's what I'm talking about! VIDEO
